Join The Auxiliary
DEVELOP
LEADERSHIP SKILLS
You can learn how to work with the media, develop interpersonal skills, learn
the best way to run an effective meeting, and gain self-confidence as you
sharpen your public speaking skills before peers and community groups. Start as
a local Auxiliary committee chairman and work your way to the National
Presidency as you gain experience as a leader.
ACHIEVE
A LEGISLATIVE VOICE
As a family member of a veteran, your voice will be heard on Capitol Hill. Along
with the VFW, the Auxiliary was instrumental in bringing the Agent Orange issue
to light, and elevating the Department of Veterans Affairs to Cabinet-level
status. There are many important issues but just two that the organization is
investigating today are the Persian Gulf Syndrome and health care benefits for
women veterans.
SERVE YOUR COMMUNITY
Become involved in one of the largest volunteer groups in the nation. The
634,404 Auxiliary members volunteer at VA Medical Centers and nursing homes
throughout the country, and for organizations such as the March of Dimes,
Special Olympics, Ronald McDonald Houses, and Make-A-Wish Foundation.
ENJOY ACTIVITIES AS A FAMILY
The Auxiliary, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Junior Girls and Sons of the
VFW Units, provide opportunities for your entire family to be involved. In
addition, you will come to view the members as your extended family, when you
see for yourself how they care for fellow members who are sick, grieving or in
need of special help.
PROMOTE PATRIOTISM
Join in the 68th Annual Auxiliary Ceremony marking the Statue of Liberty's
Birthday. Teach young people about our heritage, respect for our Flag, and the
responsibilities of citizenship, such as voting.
HONOR AMERICA'S VETERANS by supporting the Women In
Military Service for America Memorial, WWII Memorial and others.
PROVIDE SPECIAL SERVICES TO VETERANS through special
projects such as Operation Uplink which provides prepaid
long-distance telephone cards to active duty military personnel and hospitalized
veterans. Help those who need special attention... such as assisting homeless
veterans and their families.
FRIENDSHIP
Make friendships that you will treasure throughout your life and enjoy the
camaraderie you will share as you work together to help others, share a laugh,
or cope with crises.
